Move Over Spider-Man, Josh Trank Bringing Venom to Solo Film

Yep, you read that title right. According to the LA Times, the director of this year’s critically acclaimed super-hero themed found footage phenomenon Chronicle is being courted by Sony Pictures to helm a solo film for everyone’s favorite symbiote, Venom. Last time we saw this baddie was in Sam Raimi’s poorly received Spider-Man 3, with Topher Grace as a very underwhelming Eddie Brock.  Here’s a bit from the article…

The studio is negotiating with Josh Trank, the hot director of this winter’s found-footage hit “Chronicle,” to take the reins of the Spidey spin-off, said a person familiar with the project who was not authorized to talk about it publicly. Sony was not immediately available for comment.

As much as I loved Chronicle–well, besides the fact that Max Landis stole my script (it’s true!!!)–I’m not sure how I feel about a film with Venom as the lead. Seriously, as popular as this character is, he’s never been able to hold together his own book, let alone a feature film. But who knows? Maybe we’ll get something really great… but I’m betting against it.
