Kevin Feige Stays Silent On MARVEL Female Superhero Movies

It sounds like Marvel is not sure if it wants to take the next step forward in the relationship with its favorite females: solo movies. In an interview with Movies.com, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige was asked whether Marvel would make a solo female superhero movie before DC would.

Good question. I don’t know what they’re doing or what they’re planning. I know we have numerous exciting female heroes, whether none of them are currently slated, some of them are in development.

Although Feige was careful not divulge any details, he did reiterate that female characters have had moments to shine in films already been released, and will continue to play important roles in future stories.

Frankly, you can look at what Jane Foster does in [Thor: The Dark World], look at Pepper Potts literally saving the day and defeating the bad guy in Iron Man 3, and I’d say we already have great female heroes that are showcased and play major roles in our universe now. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as you will see, features Black Widow in her biggest role yet in any of our films. In terms of a solo standalone female hero, I’m not sure when that will be. We make two movies a year, we’ve planned through 2015 and we have some ideas of what we’re doing in 2016 and 2017, so we’ll see what happens.

There have been plenty of rumors surrounding ways Marvel will use some of its female characters, the most recent one being a Captain Marvel movie starring Katee Sackhoff. Feige has stated that we won’t hear any announcements regarding post Ant-Man films until mid-2014 at the earliest, so for now we can only speculate.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Marvel is leading the way when it comes to superhero movie innovation. Not that they have anything to prove, but they have female characters strong enough to support their own films…literally in some cases. She-Hulk could probably lift the whole movie set her movie was being filmed on.

It’d be pointless of me to ask Marvel to give some more concrete news regarding their female properties since they won’t be talking until next year, but at least put the idea under serious consideration. As much as I like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s starting to turn into a sausage fest. Let’s get some more ladies taking down the bad guys.
