I thought the character interaction was interesting in the first one, but the storyline itself could have been more interesting (despite the fact taht they were more interested in the characters). I'm also not a fan of Whedon's aesthetics. The world didn't really look 'lived in', and veered too far towards camp for me. With all of that said, the flick was really good, but I'm just bothered by the look of it, which is something integral to Whedon's direction. I might be the only one not excited by this news.
