It was recently announced that Atonement and Hanna director Joe Wright would be making a Peter Pan origin film for Warner Bros. entitled Pan. The studio is looking to cast it’s main villain which looks to be Blackbeard The Pirate instead of Captain Hook. Apparently, a rights issue could be behind the switch up. Spanish actor Javier Bardem is being eyed by the Warner Bros. for the role of Blackbeard. Bardem is best known for playing eccentric antagonists in films such as No Country For Old Men and Skyfall. If cast, Javier could help attract other big names to the project. Based on the characters created by JM Barrie the script is written by Jason Fuchs.

“An orphan is taken to the magical world of Neverland, where he becomes the savior of the natives and leads a rebellion against evil pirates.”

There has been a steady influx of pirate projects in recent years. Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Sherlock Holmes, The Man From U.N.C.L.E) is putting together a new Treasure Island movie. While Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) has expressed an interest in getting into the genre soon. Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is also on it’s way over at Disney. Blackbeard has been engrained lately into pulp culture with an appearance in Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Bardem’s wife Penelope Cruz starred). Along with a more recent incarnation in the successful video game Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
