Jason Statham Starring In LAYER CAKE Sequel VIVA LA MADNESS

It looks like we’re finally getting a sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s Layer Cake. You know, the film that gave us our first taste of Daniel Craig as a leading man. Cake even featured a silly moment of Craig pretending to play Bond pre-Casino Royale. However, it doesn’t look like Daniel will be back in that role. As Deadline reports Jason Statham has got a hold of the book rights to J.J. Connolly’s Viva La Madness and aims to play the lead character. Cake was adapted from Connolly’s novel and he also penned the script. Statham just finished shooting Expendables 3 and plays the main villain in Fast And Furious 7. Jason’s girlfriend, model/actress Rosie Hunington-Whiteley (Transformers 3) was recently spotted with a copy of the book in hand. I wouldn’t rule out her landing a role too.

“The protagonist is looking for a beach to land on in retirement, but instead he gets involved with trans-Atlantic drug deals, money laundering, high-tech electronic fraud, London lowlifes and Venezuelan drug cartels.”

No word if Matthew Vaughn is even interested in returning to direct as he’s currently shooting The Secret Service. Matthew will likely be following that up with Superior. Vaughn has ties to Statham’s beginning in the British film industry. As he was a producer on Jason’s first film Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels and his first lead role in Snatch. Those films were directed by Guy Ritchie who is currently directing The Man From U.N.C.L.E and is looking at making Sherlock Holmes 3 afterwards. I previously mentioned wanting to see Welcome To The Punch‘s Eran Creevy direct The Bourne Legacy sequel. Which Justin Lin is circling instead. Yet, I think Eran would be better suited taking on a slick British thriller like Viva La Madness. He’s currently shooting the film Autobahn which stars Nicholas Hoult (X-Men Days of Future Past) and Amber Heard (Machete Kills). Along with developing a possible sequel to Punch.
