What If J. J. Abrams Made A SUPERMAN Movie?

Ever wonder to yourself “What would happen if that nice J.J. Abrams fellow made a Superman movie?”.

Well, he very nearly did. Way back in yester-decade, J. J. Abrams was hired to create a Superman origins movie title Superman Flyby. Featuring a few wacky twists on the classic Kryptonian lore, Flyby was meant to relaunch the franchise for the new millenium. Of course, Bryan Singer eventually inherited the project, bringing his own unique vision to the modern Superman movie mythos, but we’ve stumbled across some of Abrams’s original concept art.

If memory serves me right, the plot of Superman Flyby focused on a modern, fully realized Man of Steel roaming around Earth, achieving Herculean feats as intersecting flashbacks illuminated his origins. At the same time, the script follows the journey of Ty-Zor, Superman’s Kryptonian cousin who’s hellbent on murdering Superman and destroying our lovely little Earth.

Not exactly a Zod rip-off, but pretty damn close.

I would’ve loved to watch Flyby in theatres in the early 2000’s, but now that Man of Steel director Zack Snyder has recorded a Superman vs Kryptonian brawl on the big screen, I’m sufficiently stuffed on those particular villains.

Bring on the Luthor! Darkseid! Metallo!

YES! I’ve been seeing lots of pictures and information about this production come up ever since Man of Steel came out and I am just saddened that there isn’t one more Superman movie to watch.

So in other words he would destroy what the fans cared about while making money for the studio. Just like everything JJ touches. Money is what makes the world go round, I get that. ST was hyped to the moon, it became the popular thing for a short time. But that doesn’t last. Once you get to sequels you need the franchise fans to pull it off. They just happened to be peed all over from the first movie. Once the sequel came out, the rest of the universe realized what the real fans did. JJ has no idea the mythos he’s working with, and no clue how to work with established canon. He destroyed ST, and he is about to destroy SW. IDC how many Superman movies other studios come up with. I don’t want him anywhere NEAR Superman.

BTW, there has yet to be a director to use a Superman villain right. At the very least Luthor has been lame in every attempt. I get that Luthor has had many different reinventions over the years, from Mad Scientist to Rich Boy Bruce Wayne Wannabe to President of the USA. But what is with the fascination about Luthor being some sort of Real Estate scam artist on a global level? Superman I he’s trying to shake California loose to create a “new land.” Superman II he’s bargaining with Zod to become ruler of “Australia”. Superman III’s villain isn’t Luthor, but might as well have been. The evil plot is more aligned to what I would have expected Luthor to be (taking over the world with a supercomputer, killing Superman with a Kryptonite laser). Superman IV: Luthor is back in a plot that is more suited to a supervillain…too bad it was horribly directed and produced. Superman Returns: which just throws away Supes III and IV. Heck all Snyder’s Luthor did was copy the evil plot from the original with some minor changes.

What gives me hope is that Man of Steel seemingly has Luthor in a higher standing among the populous. Something rivaling Bruce Wayne financially, and it’s about time.
