Warner Bros. is looking to cast Hugh Jackman as the primary villain in Joe Wright’s Pan, according to THR. Jackman became a new candidate when Javier Bardem (Skyfall, No Country For Old Men) exited talks to play Blackbeard The Pirate, who will be the big baddie of the picture. Director Joe Wright might be better known for dramas like Atonement and Anna Karenina, but proved with Hanna he can also tackle exciting action projects as well. The film will be a prequel of sorts, as we see Pan and Hook start off as friends. It’s also expected Pan won’t be as young as previous incarnations of the tale.
Pan and the man who becomes Hook as friends, with Hook a member of the crew on Blackbeard’s pirate ship. Blackbeard is the villain of the piece, with the two friends teaming up to take him down. During the process, a rift between the two develops, and two diverging paths are taken.
Hugh is currently filming Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi comedy Chappie, along with being on the fence about taking on X-Men: Apocalypse and a budding sequel to The Wolverine (which allows him to collaborate with James Mangold, on it’s story). We saw Jackman take a darker approach in Prisoners and he is arguably the villain in Christopher Nolan’s Prestige. Playing a pirate villain could be something meaty enough that could have Jackman might seriously consider taking the part, it’s a type of genre role that doesn’t come around very often.
