GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Isn’t A STAR WARS Rip-Off, So Stop Saying It Is!

At least, that’s what Marvel Studios’ head honcho Kevin Feige is saying. Which is a bit out of the ordinary, since in years prior Feige has repeatedly referenced George Lucas’s Star Wars when seeking to compare Guardians of the Galaxy to previous flicks. But that was in a wilder time, before Disney bought LucasFilm and forced Jedi and Avengers under the same roof.

Here’s Feige’s full statement…

“We’re not making this to make Marvel’s Star Wars. We’re doing this to explore the other side of the existing Marvel Universe. The fact that Peter Quill is a human from our time, that he carries a personal cassette recorder with him, already it’s very different. It’s not a long, time ago in a galaxy far, far away, it’s now in a galaxy far, far away,”

Come on, Feige.

Sure, Guardians of the Galaxy may not borrow the fundamental tropes of Star Wars (sorcerer’s apprentice, one against an empire, kissing siblings) but I’m sure James Gunn has included more than a few themes borrowed straight from Episodes IV, V, and VI. That said, I’m more excited than an alcoholic in post Prohibition Detroit for Guardians. Deliver a few mind blowing Thanos scenes, a scoop of high stakes space heists, and Chris Pratt being… well, Chris Pratt, and you’ll have my money.
