Why We Don’t Need The GOTHAM PD Show

This Gotham PD show is either gonna be really good, or one of the most heinous stinkers to grace the tiny screen since WB’s failed Birds of Prey.

According to one of Fox’s chief gurus Kevin Reilly, the show will shine its Batsignal on a boatload of untold tales: Batman origins, Joker origins, Riddler origins, Penguin origins… the whole ‘shebang’. But that’s not sucha crazy idea, as Gotham PD is meant to show the city in its youth, when Commissioner Gordon was a lowly detective, and mobsters were the main scourge of urban society, not masked villains.

Still, coupling this new Gotham show with DC’s other live action television efforts like Arrow leaves a glaring question… Won’t this all be confusing? I mean, the main driving force of DC’s new Cinemtaic Universe is cohesion. They want to offer a comprehensive superhero experience comparable to Marvel Studios. But why create a live-action tv universe at the same time?

Even if we few fanboys understand that Gotham PD is separate from Batman VS Superman or Arrow, how would the layman? I know that sounds like a lame concern, but confusing your audience (and your only revenue source) has led to the downfall of many a film. It certainly affected The Incredible Hulk, when that series was rebooted so soon after Ang Lee’s attempt. Hell, Marvel’s own Agents of SHIELD has devolved into a liability in recent months, as the show lacks almost every endearing trait that its silver screen counterparts display. And that show’s canonical. It’s taken every special step to ensure that it doesn’t contradict the cinematic exploits of Iron Man, Thor, or any other Avengers.

I don’t know… I’ve rambled on a bit too long (I’ll blame that original chicken sandwich meal from Burger King. BK, I regret you so hard right now!), but I honestly don’t see the appeal in a live action television tale, especially when the franchise is alive and well on the big screen. The glaring gap in quality completey destroys the illusion of a single narrative, and since television and film are so intricately linked, shitty tv shows harm the appeal of otherwise great movies.
