GODZILLA Will Follow the Story of a Soldier, Will Also Feature More than One Monster

Let’s do a little summary of past updates. Warner Bros. looks to commit to a March start date, Producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee have left the project, casting is being sought after, and it’s getting a final rewrite. The updates just kept rolling in, and finally, it appears we’ve reached the endgame news. Story details have been quiet since it was first announced back in 2009. The only things we knew is that the title monster would battle another, and that this film would be really gritty and put Godzilla in our world today. Now, over from CHUD, two very big details that according to them are 100% confirmed have been released. Check them out, analyze, and keep reading.

The film will feature more than one monster, confirming that two new monsters will also be wreaking havoc – this in addition to the big green guy.

Warner Bros. made it clear that their interpretation of the material “follows the story of a solider” and is “way different” than the Toho Godzilla films.

Let’s look at the first update. We already know he’s battling another monster, but it looks like there will be a second one. The question was whether or not these other monsters will be from the TOHO films, but since the word ‘new’ is used, it looks like we’ll be having some new monster creations.

Now the second update is arguably bigger. When I heard about the soldier part, it instantly reminded me of the current mini-series from IDW, Half Century War. It too follows the story of a solider as he narrates throughout the years about Godzilla’s destruction. The final part that it’s going to be ‘way different’ than the TOHO films could rub longtime fans the wrong way. I personally am indifferent. I think this film should be its own unique thing, whether going a ‘way different’ route is a good thing or not remains to be seen. With Gareth Edwards directing, I think we’ll have a very unique giant monster movie. But the most important thing is to make sure that Godzilla isn’t a plot device, he’s a character, not the Cloverfield Monster. (The latter is still pretty awesome though!)

We’ll see the big G stomp into theaters next year on May 16th.
