Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Movie

Harry Potter is back… kinda. J.K. Rowling and WB have come together with a new idea to keep the million dollar franchise afloat, and that idea is a movie about an old man from Harry Potter, who was dead before the books started. No it’s not James Potter. It’s not the Peverell Brothers. It’s not even Godric Gryffindor. It’s Newt Scamander, the author of the rarely mention school book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Any die hard Harry Potter fan knows that Rowling released a copy of this book to the muggle world, and they also know that it is not a story, but a textbook. It tells all about a multitude of creatures from the wizarding world and (as the title suggests) where they live. It really is a fun read, but it being a movie is a strange idea.

J.K. Rowling will make her screenwriting debut for this movie, which will focus on Newt and his adventures around the world to write his book. According to J.K. there was talk of giving this movie to another author, but she would have none of that

“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.” -JK Rowling

Though this isn’t the Harry Potter story fans have been begging for, it will be nice to return to that world. Maybe this could introduce us to a new beloved character, maybe it can open the door to more spinoffs (J.K., we want a Marauders movie), or maybe it could bomb so bad that we never want to see another Harry Potter story again. Either way bring it on Rowling, I’m already waiting for the midnight showing.
