Disney and Weinstein Announce Artemis Fowl Movie Adaptation

If you’ve never read the Artemis Fowl book series, go out and get them right now. It’s okay, you can read the rest of this article later, just go and get the books. You’ll thank me later.

Artemis Fowl is a fantastic book series that does as much for it’s adult audiences as the kids its written for. The books follow the titular Artemis Fowl, a teenage criminal mastermind who kidnaps a fairy to ransom her for enough gold to restore his dwindling family fortune. What he doesn’t know is that these aren’t the fairies of fairy tails, these ones mean business. Holly is a member of LEPRecon and knows how to handle herself. Artemis has to use all of his resources to make sure he stays one step ahead of the game.

The movie will be penned by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix scribe Michael Goldenberg, and produced by Harvey Weinstein (Lord of the Rings, Pulp Fiction) and Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal will be executive producers. With Weinstein’s weight behind the adaptation, fans can relax in the knowledge he knows how to transfer fantasy to the big screen.

Sean Bailey, president, Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production explains “With its balance of mystery, adventure and family appeal, Artemis Fowl is a natural fit for Disney. We’re looking forward to collaborating with Harvey on this exciting project.”

Harvey Weinstein weighed in on the matter as well, “I feel as though everything is coming full circle considering Bob De Niro and Jane Rosenthal brought me this book while I was still at Miramax and within hours I told them I wanted the rights to the film. This is a special project for me because my children absolutely love this book. This story is for everyone and there is no one better than Disney to make a film that will excite people young and old.”

We’re really excited to see what they can do with such fantastic source material. There’s no word on the casting as of yet but we’ll bring you word when we here more.
