Ben Affleck comes out of the gate swinging! In a recent interview, the future Batman discusses his trust in Zack Snyder, and how the Batman vs Superman director has a great eye for achieving amazing, realistic superhero movies. While on the subject of those silver screen epics, Affleck briefly spoke about the cheesier aspects of these flicks.

And at the end of the day, the truth is it’s really directors that make movies work or not — especially these kinds of movies, where it’s about the whole world, and a rising tide lifts all ships. And if it all has integrity, if it all has a sense of realism, then it works. And if it doesn’t, than it doesn’t really matter what everyone’s doing [on the screen] because they just look like a bunch of Mexican wrestlers in suits.

Don’t get me wrong, I completely agree with Ben Affleck, the greatest Batman to ever live (according to my hopes and dreams). If comic book movies miss the mark on realism, they often do so by a wide margin, and it’s really difficult to invest yourself in a cinematic adventure that feels like a self-aware comedy, with some of your favorite characters as the joke (Spider-Man 3, you know I’m talking about you).

Although, I still have a special place in my heart where the walls are draped in posters of Jack Kirby’s creations and Stan Lee scribed thought bubbles dangle from tiny coronary strings. In other words… I cherish the cheesiness of comic books past, and I love some of the more faithful adaptations. Adam West’s Batman, Punisher: War Zone, even Ghost Rider… They’re cheesy, but I love them.

But or this new round of DC superhero movies, I’d prefer my universe dark, terrifying, and dusted with a light layer of noir.
