ZACK SNYDER says BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN Will Not Ruin SUPERMAN

The day of the Batman vs. Superman film announcement is a day many of us can clearly remember. The internet exploded with the news, in more ways than one. All of them cheering for it, posting pictures of the logo on social media networks, typing being in perpetual caps-lock and most importantly the virtual screams of nerds everywhere resounding against digital screens.

Until the implications of the announcement actually sank in, and people realized that a very recognizable quote from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns was used to “show” people what the film was about:

“I want you to remember, Clark…in all the years to come…in your most private moments…I want you to remember…my hand…at your throat…I want…you to remember…the one man who beat you.”

It’s pretty climactic-sounding, isn’t it? This is what Bruce Wayne said when he defeated Superman in a fist fight.

Since then, concerns have been expressed by nearly anyone who thinks Superman isn’t a government tool – because that’s what Superman was in The Dark Knight Returns – a government tool.

For anyone who has read the book, they would know that it makes a fantastic Batman story but at the same time makes a terrible Superman story. And for a character that is at the center of a budding franchise, it seems like a bad idea to suggest that Frank Miller’s version of Superman is going to inform the character that we’re going to see in Batman vs. Superman.

Have no fear, fanpersons! While doing the promotional rounds, director Zack Snyder told French magazine Popcorn (via Comic Book Theraphy) this about The Dark Knight Returns:

“The comic book will influence the history of Batman vs. Superman, on which the writer David S. Goyer and myself will work.”

Furthermore, he also talked about Ben Affleck’s casting where he says that:

“Ben brings an interesting counterweight to the performance of Henry in the role of Superman. He has the experience necessary to paint the picture of an older and more advised man than Clark Kent, who bears the scars of a seasoned vigilante while retaining the charm that Bruce Wayne deploys when present in the world.”

These statements “confirm” (I use the term lightly) that The Dark Knight Returns will primarily influence Batman/Bruce Wayne’s character in the upcoming film and not necessarily Superman/Clark Kent’s.

On top of that, what with the commentary on the state of the military-industrial complex in Man of Steel, in addition to Superman’s shaky relationship with the government, Zack Snyder’s comments about Batman/Bruce Wayne may put people at ease as to how Superman’s character is going to be handled in Batman vs. Superman.

If anything, it seems like Batman/Bruce Wayne is going to just be in a more distrustful position of Superman because of the fact that well, Man of Steel’s Superman doesn’t really know what he’s doing.

And that sounds a lot better than “Fuck you, Clark. I’m going to kill you.”

*Also, what the hell, Zack Snyder? When are we going to hear about Wonder Woman?
