Amy Pond Set To Play The Female Villain In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

I don’t think this was a headline anybody was expecting to write. Ever. Last night THR broke the news that actress Karen Gillan, who achieved worldwide fame playing Amy Pond on Doctor Who up until recently, has signed on to play the “lead female villain” in Marvel‘s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. Who’s she playing? Well, we don’t know – but there is a STAGGERING amount of villains/rumoured villains in this movie already, so that makes me even more clueless. Check out some possible characters below:

  1. The Matriarch – Assistant to the leader of the Universal Church of Truth, who is Magus/Adam Warlock.
  2. Nebula – A space pirate with strong ties to Thanos who briefly wielded the Infinity Gauntlet.
  3. Moondragon – A bisexual member of the Guardians, daughter of Drax, nearly killed by Thanos as a child.
  4. Death – The physical manifestation of death itself, whom Thanos is in love with yet she doesn’t return his love.
  5. Carina – Daughter of The Collector (who was previously rumoured to appear) and lover of Korvac.

She could be playing any one of those characters, but Gillan’s inclusion just makes the rest of the plot more confusing. We know Lee Pace is playing the other main villain, and right now the fan speculation is that he’ll be Richard Rider (aka Nova), chasing down the Guardians who have been described as “ex-cons” and “space pirates,” in possession of “something everybody wants”. We recently heard that actress Glenn Close was set to play the leader of the Nova Corps and Wreck-It Ralph star John C. Reilly is also going to appear in a leadership position in the Corps.

However, if we’re all wrong about that and Pace is playing Adam Warlock/Magus then that brings into question what the hell the Corps are doing in this movie. Additionally, if she’s playing Carina, who is Opehlia Lovibond (her role was described as “an aide to the Collector“) playing? And what if the rumours of Pace playing Ronan the Accuser, leader of the Kree, were right and Gillan is playing Crystal the Inhuman?

This is far too confusing. You probably know that I’m a massive Doctor Who fan so Gillan’s inclusion is excellent in my book, and it should be interesting to see what she’ll bring to the movie. This also makes her the second Who actor to have a role in Phase II, after Christopher Eccleston as Malekith in Thor: The Dark World this November.

What do you think? Who do you think Karen Gillan is playing in Guardians of the Galaxy? Share your thoughts below.
