YOUNG JUSTICE: INVASION “Intervention” Review

Yesterday morning’s episode of Young Justice: Invasion brought the Blue Beetle sub-plot to it’s climax. But was it a conclusive one? Spoilers follow.

In this episode, now that the team has been rescued from The Reach, they decide to go after Blue Beetle (Eric Lopez), to free him from the Reach’s control. But even if they defeat him, can they free his mind?

I enjoyed this episode. It was more simple than I thought. For those viewers who prefer their episodes to focus on one plot-line, this is for you. Unlike some episodes which cram in half-a-dozen sub-plots, this one is mostly centered on the one.

I like the team’s plan to rescue Blue Beetle. It is well-thought out, and I like how they briskly take out Blue Beetle, Queen Bee’s minions, and then Green Beetle (Phil LaMarr). Also, Zatanna (Lacey Chabert) finally gets to do something, and boy, it is vital. Fans should be pleased.

The dialogue is still a strong point (I like how, despite being under control, Jaime still has thoughts of his own, and man, they are entertaining to listen to at times), and the battle scenes are top-notch. The animation is crisp.

A match made in Fish Heaven!

Unfortunately, now I have to list some of the negatives. Miss Martian (Danica McKellar) dumping Lagoon Boy (Yuri Lowenthal) felt like a very unnecessary sub-plot. I honestly don’t see why we had to watch that. It added nothing to this episode, and felt like a time waster.

Meanwhile, at the very start of this episode, the fight between Black Beetle (Kevin Grevioux) and Mongul (Keith David) was pretty rushed, in my opinion, and the ending makes Mongul look like some thug. He pretty much walked into that capsule.

Complaints aside, I mostly enjoyed this episode. And it never even crossed my mind that Green Beetle was also under control. That was a neat twist. The other “twist” at the end, with Queen Bee (Marina Sirtis) proclaiming that the Light’s plans are going forward, is less surprising, but whatever. I am enjoying this show, and I will miss it once it is gone.
