GREEN LANTERN: THE ANIMATED SERIES “Scarred” Review

Saturdays episode of Green Lantern was what I like to call an “info-dump” episode. Did the episode enlighten, or drag? Spoilers follow.

In “Scarred“, the Interceptor finally returns to Oa, to ask the blue Guardians what to do. Grouchy Appa, of course, tells Hal Jordan (Josh Keaton) to butt out. And, of course, Hal Jordan says “NO!” After finding a secret laboratory, Hal, Kilowog (Kevin Michael Richardson), and Razer (Jason Spisak) decide to go after Aya (Grey DeLisle) themselves, hoping that the yellow crystals can defeat her. Along the way, they learn Aya’s origin from a surprising character.

I liked parts of this episode. Hal and his partners earnestly want Aya back, but they also realize that they may need to destroy her, even if Razer is in denial. He wants to save her without destroying her.

The climax is pretty exciting….untill the very end, which I will get to. The animation still suits the space adventures very well, and the voice acting is a strong suit. The dialogue is full of witty banter from Kilowog.

And during the climax, Aya’s replacement AI system gets to prove his worth in a scene that is alsomost too cool for the guy. Heroic sacrifice is always cool to watch, if not kinda sad.

Now, the negatives. One character, a female Guardian who Aya previously killed, turns out to be alive. What? To be honest, it annoyed me. When Aya didn’t die, I was fine with it because it had a bigger purpose. But again? Does anyone actually die in this show?

In the flashback for Aya’s origin, she seems a bit…..sinister, maybe? I thought that was weird, since in the early episodes, she acted completely normal. I guess the writers are trying to say that Aya always had some darkness…

And my biggest complaint: by the ending, nothing has been accomplished at all. Sure, now they know why Aya was built, but…..otherwise, they are in the exact same place that they were in at the start of the episode. Aya is still blowing up stars, Hal and co. are helpless, and the Guardians are huge jerks!

Honestly, the ending gives this episode an adjective: pointless. The ending lowers the score for me, unfortunately.
