Green Lantern: The Animated Series “Babel” Review

This morning’s episode of Green Lantern had quite the challenge: Following up arguably the best episode in the series! SPOILER WARNING!

After getting blasted and ditched by Aya, the Interceptor, low on battery, crash lands on a mostly barren planet. Hal Jordan (Josh Keaton), Kilowog (Kevin Michael Richardson), and Razer(Jason Spisak)’s rings are almost completely out of power, without the rings, they can’t understand each other, the natives aren’t friendly, and the planet’s atmosphere is poisonous. The crew of the Interceptor have the worst luck!

The episode last week was downright epic. I feel bad for this episode, having to follow it up. After all, how do you top that. To the episode’s credit, it doesn’t try to, which I liked. Instead of upping the danger or whatever, we get a clever, entertaining episode. It is fun, a breath of fresh air from the dark, depressing, soap opera-like episodes that we’ve gotten recently.

I have always liked how the rings also work as translators, and I think it is a clever idea to take advantage of this. After all, can a team still use team-work if they can’t even understand each other? It makes for an interesting concept. It also led to plenty of humorous scenes.

Possibly the funniest scene occurs when our heroes are forced to barter with an alien for a ship. They don’t have any money though; in fact, all Razer has are weapons. Lots and lots of weapons. Another laugh-inducing scene is actually the final scene.

I enjoyed this episode, and unlike the Steam Lantern episode, I didn’t think that this one dragged on or got boring. Also, kudos to the writers and voice actors for writing and voicing the various alien languages!
