Looking at the New Equestria Girls Trailer

The My Little Pony spinoff movie Equestria Girls releases in about a week, so naturally we’re getting some heavy promotion. The first trailer came out a month ago, much to the disdain of fans. The concept of humanizing the ponies was always toyed around with in fanart, but never did anyone want it to become a reality. As I said, I think it’s a pretty intriguing idea. Normally I would be against something like this, since high school stories rarely go well. But the team was responsible for bringing three seasons of Friendship is Magic, so I was cautiously optimistic about this movie. EW debuted the new trailer today, and I think I can erase the ‘cautious’ part, cause well…it looks rather very good.

There are some very interesting things to be seen here.

1. We see that Sunset Shimmer was actually a pony within the series. Now this is interesting, and adds depth to the character as opposed to being the ‘mean girl’ over in high school land. For people that don’t know, her toy description states she was a student of Princess Celestia at one point, so it’ll be quite interesting if that’s explored here. Why is a former student stealing? Out of jealousy? Has she turned to the dark side? This is a great subject that hopefully will be explored.

2. Spike talks. One of the primary concerns with this movie was transforming Spike into a dog, which translates into a pet. The criticism was easily understandable, by doing that there’s a slight implication that he’s not good enough to be an actual character as opposed to a pet in this alternate world. But with him talking and being the same friend to Twilight, I think that’s no longer a worry.

3. New character alert at the beginning. The stallion that says “Princess Twilight Sparkle” is most likely the human guy that’s strangely lacking from this trailer. You can see they both have the same hair. I like how this trailer made sure to show us that there is an absolute reason and purpose to the story, not just a big excuse to have Twilight in a high school with a supposed love interest. I guess that’s why the latter wasn’t shown.

The signature humor is present, my favorite line is when Twilight says “I have no idea!” to Spike’s question of how she’s going to win the Fall Formal. Now the fact that Twilight has to become princess of this event might be the most questionable thing. Now that is something that could be argued as an excuse to have more of the generic high school stuff. But I won’t complain since right now everything is pointing in the right direction.

In summary, with this trailer Equestria Girls has risen from its original ‘shallow concept’ reputation. There’s a really good story and what looks to be a memorable antagonist. The humor is there, and the music looks to be fantastic. It comes out next week on the 16th. I have my ticket ordered, so you can expect a review that evening.
