Until San Diego Comic Con, backpacks always seemed a mandatory, if uninspiring accessory. Sure, backpacks could evenly distribute the weight of books across your back and you could even jazz them up with some cute buttons, but they weren’t useful like, say, a $300 Wonder Woman tiara and cuff set or a My Little Pony Derpy toy. But San Diego Comic Con changed all that, for it was on that fateful weekend I discovered the concept of The Plushy Backpack. That’s right, an accessory that is half plushy, half backpack. It can even double up as a cushion while you’re waiting in line for Hall H! It may be too late for this year’s cons, but since it’s never too early to prepare for next year’s, here are my Top 5…
5. Yoda

The Empire Strikes Backpack
Awesome this backpack is, yes hmmm. Whether you’re channelling Luke circa his Jedi training days or simply can’t get enough of the cuddly green alien who sounds alarmingly like Miss Piggy (both are voiced by legend Frank Oz), you have nothing to fear when Yoda has your back.

4. Pikachu
Pika Pika Me!
The Pokemon catchphrase may have been ‘Gotta Catch ‘Em All’ but what else do you need once you have the yellow ball of fur with the lightning bolt tail. This little guy will brighten up any day, no matter how heavy your load.
ToysRUs $17.99
3. Hello Kitty
Hello Plushy
This Hello Kitty plush is just so pink. Dressed in her ballet outfit she’s a decidedly feminine choice for the cut and thrust of the Comic Con floor but never underestimate the sheer marketing power of Hello Kitty. And until they come out with a Kiss x Hello Kitty plush backpack, this one will just have to do.
Sanrio $38
2. Hamtaro
Hammin’ It Up
Hamtaro is the star of a little known Japanese television series called, er, Hamtaro. That’s pretty much all that’s known about him other than the fact that this he makes the cutest darn backpack I’ve ever seen.

1. Batman
I Am the Knight
Awsome-o. There is no other word for this chibby, chubby Batman with the Adam West suit and the Christian Bale attitude. Succeed where countless of DC villains have failed and get inside Bruce Wayne’s head (just unzip!). You can store stuff in there too.
Hot Topic $24.50
