8 Enemies Who Need To Return For DOCTOR WHO Series 8

While still relishing the first full appearance of Peter Capaldi’s Doctor, we Whovians also await the arrival of a virtual army of monsters, aliens and vile masterminds that accompany every series of Doctor Who, much like the companions accompany the Doctor. Now, while the universe (as well as the imagination of Steven Moffat) is the limit, there are a few menacing images that come to mind to most Who fans.  Now, I won’t insult your intelligence by rehashing how we want to see Daleks and Cybermen, although we do.  It has already been made clear that we will see both this season.  Moffat has finally decided that to hide it would be futile and just plasters pics and news of the two well-known Who monsters for all to see.  After all, what season recently has failed to deliver the all too familiar lines of ‘EXTERMINATE’ and ‘YOU WILL BE UPGRADED’?

But, as mentioned earlier, that leaves an unending line forming for their chance to defeat the Doctor.

ZYGONS

zylons

Brought back from the depths of Who history, the Zygons bring that dependable shape shifting horror that is needed in the dark times to come.  If you saw THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR, you got to see the Zygons in action and came to understand that they aren’t simply shape changers.  They actually copy the form they take; an exact duplicate.  This makes it hard to detect them or distinguish them from the original.  Whovians everywhere are hoping the anniversary special isn’t the last visit we get from these nasty, sucker covered aliens.

 THE DREAM LORD

Doctor Who Valyard

What’s worse than the conscience of the Doctor?  Not much of anything.  Brought to life by ‘psychic pollen,’ the DREAM LORD was the dark part of the Doctor himself.  He became his own accuser.  At the end of the episode AMY’S CHOICE, the Dream Lord seemingly was destroyed, but can he truly be gone?  He IS actually the dark side of the Doctor, and this new Doctor is billed as the darkest of them all.

WHOVIAN question of the day:  Does the Dream Lord have ANY connection to the Valeyard last seen in TRIAL OF A TIME LORD?  The Valyard was revealed to be a ‘projection’ of the darker aspects of the Doctor’s nature who is dead set on killing the Doctor to take his regenerations.  Now that it seems that Doctor may have a whole new set of regenerations, will we see him again?  Is the Dream Lord in fact the Valeyard?

THE VASHTA NARADA

Check the shadows!

Check the shadows!

The best of the Doctor’s villains seem to come with cool catchphrases.  EXTERMINATE.  PREPARED TO BE UPGRADED.  SILENCE WILL FALL.  DON’T BLINK.  Well, none is more sobering than CHECK THE SHADOWS!

The Vashta Narada debuted in the episode SILENCE IN THE LIBRARY as microscopic predators (the piranhas of the air) whose name translates as “the shadows that melt flesh.” Epitomized by a white space suit with a glowing skeleton inside (Scooby Doo anyone?), this swarm could devour whole planets.  Last we saw of them, they cowered before the Doctor because of something they read about him in the library.  But surely they could easily push past their fear of the Doctor, especially with the Doctor’s ‘weakened’ and vulnerable condition.

 THE GREAT INTELLIGENCE

When you hear the Whisper men...

When you hear the Whisper men…

I know what you’re saying, Whovians, “Clara entered the Doctor’s timeline and wiped him out.”

Well, did she?  The Great Intelligence has become one of the hardest villains for the Doctor to stop.  Incorporable and able to control others, G.I. spans the Doctor’s timeline trying to destroy the Doctor at every turn and in every incarnation.  And if you think ‘dead is dead’ in the WHOverse, well, you may just have another thing coming.  I expect to see the Great Intelligence and the Whisper Men sooner than anyone expects.

 THE WEEPING ANGELS

DON'T BLINK!

DON’T BLINK!

I didn’t put these villains in any particular order for. If I did, the Weeping Angels and the Silence would be at the top.

Now, many may think that we’ve been far too inundated with the scary statues during Matt Smith’s incarnation of the Doctor, but I think there is at least one more story to write about them:  THEIR ORIGIN.  It’s the one thing that show runner, Steven Moffat, likes to do that he hasn’t done yet.  It seems imperative that he explain where the Weeping Angels came from.  Once we think about it, it’s one of the mysteries left uncovered.

 THE SILENCE

Has silence truly fallen?

Has silence truly fallen?

I had to include them.  In the last seven seasons (and possibly all episodes of Doctor Who), there hasn’t been a scarier villain/alien.  First of all, they’re powerful and have a great deal of backing from the Papal Mainframe.  Do you think they just lost interest because some think Gallifrey is gone?  If anyone knows better, it’s the Mother Superius.  I’d personally give it a season or so, but they will all be back wanting the Doctor and the Time Lords wiped out of history.

THE ICEMEN OF MARS

doctorwho-icewarrior

In the episode COLD WAR, the last of the Icemen of Mars was seen as a honorable warrior as strong as he was diligent.  A dangerous armored killing machine, the Grand Marshall Skaldak, had been retrieved from his icy tomb which he had laid in for thousands of years.  I think a true warrior race is what the rougher Doctor needs to test his metal.  And MAYBE we can find out if these powerful warriors have any connection or run-in with the WATERS OF MARS episode.

THE MASTER and the TIME LORDS

Doctor Who Master

The final episode of the Matt Smith Doctor (THE TIME OF THE DOCTOR) saw the hidden Time Lords give aid to the Doctor; saving his last regeneration, and possibly giving him a whole new set to work with.  It was made clear in DAY OF THE DOCTOR that finding Gallifrey was job number one for the Doctor.  Not only do I expect the Peter Capaldi Doctor to take up the hunt for his home planet, I expect Clara to be a catalyst.

Bringing the Time Lords back seems to be a dream come true.  All the Doctors since the reboot have regretted their part in the destruction of Gallifrey and the Daleks.  So their return and discovery should be a good thing, right?  Maybe not.  Ever heard the phrase ‘Be careful what you wish for; you just may get it’?  Well, that is in full operation here.  The Time Lords have despised the Doctor ever since he stole a TARDIS and started traipsing across time and space.  Even in DAY OF THE DOCTOR, they were not happy to see him.

Will they be grateful to the Doctor?  Will they give him a parade?  Or will they decide to try him for the many crimes and violations of time?  This also begs the question whether we will see any of the other renegade Time Lords along the way to Gallifrey.  The aforementioned Valyard, Omega, who went from being the hero of the Time Lords to wanting to be a Time God, and the Rani, who is a Time Lord Dr. Frankenstein, could all make appearances now that the Time Lords are back.  But most of all, WHOVIANS all over await the return of the Doctor’s opposite, THE MASTER.  There are rumors…

I’m excited to say the least.  No matter what monsters there be, I and millions of Who fans everywhere will be in front of the television taking in the next adventures of our favorite time traveling champion!
