Wonder Woman #11 Review

Wonder Woman has reached her 11th issue.  So has the reboot lost its steam?  Or does it continue to revolutionize this classic character?  Read on to find out.

The official description from DC:

A new story begins as APOLLO makes his play for ZEUS’S throne – and WONDER WOMAN is the last obstacle in his way!

As ZOLA goes into labor, a hideous secret is revealed!

Since the new 52 relaunch, the Wonder Woman monthly series has stayed fairly disconnected from the greater DC universe.  There has been no other superhero guest appearances, as this series instead focused in on the pantheon of greek gods and goddesses.  This is the genius of this title as it offers a fully realized narrative, that’s self contained.  Not only does it give our title character a corner in this shared universe, but it truly makes Wonder Woman the essential hero she was always meant to be.

With action, a complex narrative, and qwirky dialogue Brian Azzarello has successfully reinvented this icon for a new generation.  From the slower moments, to the high action ones this dramatic series is a slice of the good life as it offers a story that has continually evolved from issue one.  It’s all been leading to this point, and as readers reach the cliffhanger contained in this issue, it will satisfy and make any fan eager for next month’s release.

Cliff Chiang returns to the art duties this issue, yielding highly stylized panels that make this comic a visual treat.  With simple pencil strokes a world full of gods and demigods easily comes to life in some very dynamic shots.  From Olympus to a small town, this comic book has never looked better.  If possible this talented artist is improving with each outing.

For my money, there is no better comic book series in the new 52 than Wonder Woman, and if you’re not reading this series you should be.  Highly recommended.
