Witchblade #168 Review

It’s all been building toward this point.  But should we really care what happens to our heroine as the pieces to this puzzle come together?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

“ABSOLUTE CORRUPTION,” Part Two
After failing to capture the murderous criminal Toio Mulranny, Sara is forced to ask who is the greater threat: Toio or former Witchblade bearer Katarina Godliffe?

In seventeen issues this creative team has more than put enough cogs in motion to make any devoted followers head spin.  They’ve abandoned quite a few of the more traditional characters to create a new life and rouges gallery for our protagonist.  But now the bill for her move to Chicago is due and she’s got to find some way to deal with this storm before it buries her beneath its gusts of wind.

Tim Seeley pens the script and the scribe wastes no time getting right into the swing of things. Following last month’s outing there are quite a few balls up in there as Sara Pezzini and Katarina Godliffe embrace their roles and set out on this adventure.  There were some off moments here and there, especially when the writer attempted a loose connection with one of the series’ missed antagonists but for the most part the content did exactly what it needed to in order to engage and set up the next chapter of this sprawling saga.

The art by Diego Bernard is sturdy and consistent as the talent brings all the pieces together in an excellent crescendo.  There are some missteps along the way as some of the forms or re-imagined outfits look a tad bit out of place, but for the most part I found the work to be appealing.  In particular I enjoyed the lines during the final fight scene, as the illustrator really put his skills to the test while building a complex series of panels that represent some of his best renditions to date.

Witchblade #168 is a good issue with a rather predictable but solid twist that should get fans excited for the franchise’s next outing.  Recommended.
