Witchblade #164 Review

Is this a universe that’s still worth following?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

“HOPE THROUGH THE DARKNESS”

Sara Pezzini moved to Chicago to escape her failures and to leave her demons behind her in New York. Her new life in the Windy City has been far more difficult and far stranger than she ever expected. Until now, her past has stayed buried. But when Rapture bearer Tom Judge and Darkness bearer Jackie Estacado come a knocking, Sara risks the discovery that her new life in Chi-town may not have been a decision that she made for herself.

What we have here is a specific literary piece that by any account is the most powerful comic book yet from this creative team.  It’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but that necessary emotional punch is surely there, so fans be prepared.

The script by Tim Seeley quite effectively keeps pace with the rest of the established arc, as the series scribe offers up some revelations.  Our heroine has been through a lot since the old universe came crashing down around her, but nothing really compares to what she finds out today.  In truth it’s something that will have repercussions for quite some time as the gut-wrenching aspect of this outing will surely continue on.  The dialogue itself handles the weight of the narrative quite well only taking a few minor missteps on the road toward its destined cliffhanger.

Diego Bernard delivers another batch of pages and panels that cements the reasons as to why he’s attached to this title,  Whether he’s illustrating ancient weapons or simple conversations, he’s able to use his pencil to highlight the world in a way that simply invites inspection.  There were a few panels where certain players, specifically Tom Judge, looked a bit off from their previous interpretations but these occurrences were few and far between.

Witchblade #164 continues the arc that began in Artifacts #25 (read our review here) while also revealing details about the Top Cow Rebirth, and just what might be coming up next for these wielders. Recommended.
