Witch Doctor Mal Practice #5 Review

Official description from IMAGE:

In one corner: Dr. Vincent Morrow, the Witch Doctor. In the other: the parasite he’s been infected with. And you won’t believe where the battlefield is! Physician, heal thyself – or else!

No book needs more exposition than Witch Doctor Mal Practice, yet none handles such a need more adeptly than this book either. Dr. Morrow is infected by spell borne illness which embeds parasites, exclusively unique to magic users, can only be transmitted through sex with fellow magic users, turns your hair red and comes out at night to feed. All this is explained so skillfully and honestly that the reader never doubts it’s validity. That’s no simple task but in the hands of writer Brandon Seifert feels as natural as stopping by the store for milk. Fans of Dr. Who-esque monsters, creatures, mysticism and magic should feel right at home with this series. It’s no surprise that Seifert writes the Dr. Who and Hellraiser comics as well.

Dr. Morrow has been battling this magic infection through-out the series and begins this issue by using astral projection to physically fight off the invading parasites by creating mystical weapons out of ectoplasm. Once ridden of the infection he must enlist the help of his assist Eric, necromancer-pathologist, Catrina Macabrey and the source of his illness, Charlotte Fever to defeat disembodied monsters, magic junkies and save his indestructible monster, Penny. Issue five sets-up this final battle and based on what’s come before, what a battle it’s going to be.

Lukas Ketner’s handles the art duties with the precision of the “the surgeons” from issue two. It’s no easier to write magic, monsters, ectoplasm, astral projection and an umbrella that protects you from angels and demons than it is to illustrate it. I would dare say it’s more difficult but Ketner is a magician in is own right with his panels.

Witch Doctor is a densely woven tale with plenty of action and a mountain of humor to boot and if you love a good monster and magic story then Witch Doctor Mal Practice should be on your pull-list.
