Wild Blue Yonder #3 Review

Wild Blue Yonder Banner

Does this series soar to new heights or get lost in a dive toward mediocrity?  Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

Before he can become a full member of the Dawn, Tug will have to pass one last test… getting past Scram. Plus, the crew of The Dawn will be put to the test when an unexpected attack comes from irradiated Sky-Pirates.

Wild Blue Yonder 3_CThe easiest thing to say about this volume is that the creative team has their heart in the right place. From the first page to the final panel the basic premise of this yarn bleeds through in a way that never hinders the trajectory of the current release. Instead, it builds up a narrative path that’s easy to follow and more to the point it keeps the characters on their toes in this skyward journey.

Mike Raicht pens the script and I have to say the author does an outstanding job continuing to develop the relationships within this crew while keeping in mind the sacrifices that might have to be made for their survival.  It’s a hard balancing act but the scribe keeps everything in check while slowly but surely highlighting family issues that seem destined to cause upheaval in the future.  To sum up: if you’re looking for something a bit different from the standard book on your pull-list this is a candidate worth considering.

I can say clearly and without a doubt that Zach Howard delivers his best work to date in this release.  Whether he’s asked to illustrate simple conversation sequences or a beautiful two page spread, that instills a sense of wonder into the primary leads and their audience, he’s more than up to the task.  Each panel is carefully crafted in a way that invites detail and a thorough eye, as the final renditions withstand the test of a close inspection.

Wild Blue Yonder #3 is a great comic that proves the worth of not just the series but the creative team behind it.  It’s an original vision that’s sure to please fanboys and fangirls as it comes highly recommended.
