Weekly Comic Reviews 8/21

Greetings all. Welcome to another edition of UTF’s Weekly Comic Reviews, I’m your Godzilla-loving host, Daniel Alvarez. As you can see by the header, the Cutie Mark Crusaders get their Micro-Series comic. Besides that fun story, B.P.R.D. is back with a new arc. Let’s start off with some Trouble.

I Love Trouble #6

I Love Trouble was an all too short series that packed it’s fair share of punch. This was a title that stood out for it’s look and it’s style all while telling a fun, action packed story with a tremendous female lead. Felicia deserves to go out on a high note and Symons makes sure she does. That said I would “love” to see Symons have the opportunity to bring her back in some fashion because the comics industry is better off because of the characters and the creators of I Love Trouble. Felicia, I miss you already!

Revival #13

Revival #13 is, in many ways, different. It has all the hallmarks and building blocks of a typical Revival issue, but it neither adds substantial amounts to the mystery or answer anything important. It still feels like Revival – just perhaps not enough.

Thief of Thieves #16

So, after teasing, talking and out-right telling us about it, Thief of Thieves #16 is finally getting ready for the big heist. Of course, this issue likes to tease – and not without a plot twist or two – so be prepared for suspense. All in all, minor hiccups don’t get in the way of what I’m really excited about: a promising return to form for Thieve of Thieves. If things keep going like this, the next few issues should be very enjoyable.

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #110

There’s no denying that B.P.R.D. is one of the most unique science fiction comics on the stands right now. The atmosphere, the tone, the characters…they all add up to one compelling story after another. Wasteland is over, Lake of Fire has begun. Interestingly, it focuses on the events happening around the characters than on them specifically. The opening is utterly fantastic, how I picture next year’s GODZILLA movie beginning…with a dead giant monster collapsed on top of a house. This is definitely an issue newcomers will want to take advantage of.

Dark Horse Presents #27

If you’ve only got eight bucks to spend on comics, this is where you put it. The industry’s premier anthology series, Dark Horse Presents always promises to show you something new. It is THE best place to discover new creators. Issue #27 brings us the conclusions to three different stories.

My Little Pony Micro-Series #7: Cutie Mark Crusaders

Overall, the Cutie Mark Crusaders star in a pretty fun adventure. The Imp story is admittedly kind of disappointing however. Still, Ted Anderson knocks it out of the park with his writing of the Crusaders.

Grimm Fairy Tales Presents: OZ #2

Things weren’t looking too bright for Dorothy in the previous issue, since she was being confronted by the Wicked Witch of the East. In this issue it’s no spoiler that the Witch dies since it’s following the original film. Glinda, the Lion, and Scarecrow all make their debuts here. It’s a really fun issue for anyone that has seen the classic. OZ is quickly becoming one of Zenescope’s best.

Grimm Fairy Tales Presents: Realm Knights #1

Overall, Realm Knights is off to a pretty fun start. Sadly it’s just four issues, but oh well. The characters are great and the interactions between them is worth the price of admission alone. With a pretty cool premise for the next issue, you can bet this is going to be one of the company’s best mini-series.

Bloodshot #0

Origin stories can be tricky but Kindt and ChrisCross find a way to breath life into this story. The final few pages of the issue is a perfect ending to such a complicated story. It’s sad but packs a punch in which you won’t easily recover. This is a good jumping on point for new readers and another solid and satisfying issue to long time readers. This is a near perfect match of writing and art that brings the pages to life. Bloodshot is the complicated anti-hero of the Valiant Universe and reason why Valiant is a top-shelf comic publisher.

X-O Manowar  #16

X-O Manowar is shaping up to be the leader in the Valiant Universe and with so many solid titles that’s no easy feat. Aric and Gilad’s complicated relationship and history is the most interesting and dynamic in comics right now. Unity is going to be the toughest challenge for Aric and the Shanhara and, with the soon to be released Eternal Warrior title, the X-O Manowar section of the Valiant Universe looks to be it’s best yet.

2000AD #1846

As usual, it wouldn’t be a week of comic books without a little 2000AD. This week it’s 2000AD #1846, which contains Judge DreddDefoeThe Ten-SecondersAge Of The Wolf III and Slaine. Let’s dig in.
