Weekly Comic Reviews 8/14

Hey everyone. Here we are with UTF’s Weekly Comic Reviews, I’m your Godzilla-loving host, Daniel Alvarez. This week brings in a bunch of diverse issues. The one that wins best cover is easily Battlestar Galactica. As for best story…it gets pretty arguable since there are a few 5/5s here. Let’s begin.

Great Pacific #9

While the end of Great Pacific‘s second arc is still a few issues away, I can feel Joe Harris setting up the pieces to drastically shift the series’ status quo yet again.

Saga #13

In short, I’m glad to see Saga back. It’s not the most surprising or shocking of the series, but it’s a welcome return. However, I kinda want to get back to the situation that the previous issue left off on. Saga #13 definitely teases it’s readers.

Savage Dragon #190

Savage Dragon #190 doesn’t throw too many surprises and curve balls at the reader, which may or may not please you. Still, as slow issues go, it still has plenty to offer. All in all, this issue feels a little like filler, but it’s good filler. At the very least its an enjoyable read that seems to be going somewhere.

Breath of Bones: A Tale of the Golem #3

The creative team behind Breath of Bones had a tricky challenge on their hands when they first launched this title. Out of all the varied directions they could have taken this book, they landed in a perfect place: a horror story where Nazi’s are the real monsters, the townsfolk are the real heroes.

X #4

Swierczynski’s final pages of this issue slow down enough to have Leigh figure out what makes X tick and for her it’s as eye opening as it is an genuine progression of their relationship. Simply put X is what it says it is and nothing more or less. If you can go in with that perspective and surrender to Swierczynski and Nguyen’s all out assault on your senses then you’ll get more out of it than a simple vigilante violence because somewhere lurking beneath lies substance to go along with the brutality.

Battlestar Galactica #3

I couldn’t help but be immersed in this issue. It truly feels like an episode from the classic show. #3 of Battlestar Galactica deepens the plot, bringing an alternate timeline. Apollo and Starbuck learn firsthand the consequences of using experimental temporal weapons. There are lots of things fans are going to like, plus plenty of Cylon action to boot.

Doctor Who #12

This issue pretty much builds upon and follows where the last let off. It has a semi-cold opening that leads well into the current storyline. As for the ending itself, it’s the right mix of dialogue and action that suits Doctor Who. As stories go, it very much feels natural, yet it’s got that broader scope and setting that would otherwise be restrained by a TV budget.

Doomsday.1 #4

In the last page of Doomsday.1 issue #4 we get the little caption: “Doomsday.2.” While it’s easy to read this blurb as a promise the series will continue, I hope it also means the premise will get revamped to offer readers a stronger central story.

The X-Files: Season 10 #3

After a stellar premier issue, X-Files: Season 10 followed up with an uneven (and mildly unsatisfying) sophomore issue. But after reading the latest installment I only have one thing to say: everything is forgiven. Issue #3 might be one of the best paced X-Files stories in recent memory.

Archer & Armstrong #12

If you enjoy any of Valiant’s titles this should be on your list! Archer & Armstrong has ties across all Valiant books and the story and art literally comes alive on the page. If you want fun, action, adventure and a touch of social sensibility then put this on your pull list. You’ll be glad you did.

Harbinger #15

After re-reading Harbinger #15 I like it even more. This issue hits all the right notes, with beautiful flow and touches of fun and action. The dynamic between how the book begins and how devastating it ends makes it a great read. Valiant is doing everything right in their universe and Harbinger leads the way. It’s fun, engaging and shockingly dramatic. The issue sets the tone for the new story arc and you can’t afford to pass it by.
