Weekly Comic Reviews 10/24

It’s Halloween month folks, going trick or treating? I’ve never done it, though I did dress up as Spider-Man one year and…anyways, welcome to Unleash the Fanboy’s Weekly Comic Reviews, I’m your host, Daniel Alvarez. Post New York Comic Con, now the Halloween craze is upon us. (We even have a Halloween Special review!) Let’s get started.

Artifacts #22

Ready for the latest issue of Mr. Judge goes to Washington?  I may have attempted a lame joke there but that more or less is the sales pitch of this release.  On top of that though our protagonist has to deal with a bit of his past from the prior universe and the consequences of his resurrection (back there).  I’ve often wondered if the Top Cow Rebirth affected the landscape or the souls in Hell in its realignment, it looks like we got our answer courtesy of this rip-roaring jaunt.

Debris #4

Debris #4 is a sad comic. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just that it’s the final one. This mini-series has been fantastic. Why you ask? A simple, but engaging story, giant monsters, and most all of all, an awesome female protagonist. Not much else one can ask for. This series doesn’t try to hammer down messages or try to be ‘smart’ by using dialogue you’ll see in bigger name titles, it’s just telling a simple story about a girl trying to find water for her people. The finale isn’t quite as explosive as I thought it’d be, and even slightly a little rushed. It could have used an extra issue. But nonetheless, it’s still a very good installment and a fine closing with a satisfying ending.

Hack/Slash #19

I’m not going the beat around the bush, when I started reviewing Hack/Slash for Unleash The Fanboy the comic book series came off as a fun but story-thin romp with monsters.  This issue however had the right narrative balance to push this tale forward in a direction that offered a competent read that’s sure to please both current and potential future fans.

Lil’ Depressed Boy #14

Prophet #30

After previous issues, Prophet #30 continues to build on the series, offering a coherent plot that wraps various elements together, creating a grounded plot that’s easy to follow. In short, this seems to be a big improvement or turning point for the series, where new followers will have a greater grasp on what is going on.

Revival #4

Undead, drama, the supernatural, possible aliens/demons… Revival #4 continues the amazing ability to juggle all of these various aspects, delivering a quality, gripping story as a result. Rich with characters and suspense, Revival #4 delves deep into the rural noir of Revival.

Lord of the Jungle #8

Ending the first major arc, Lord Of The Jungle #8 wraps up its introduction to Tarzan. Whilst his future isn’t clear, this issue does a good job delivering a worthy conclusion. At the very least, its not what would be expected; the writer’s haven’t simply struck out for the easy option.

Pantha #4

t’s been (prepare for the worst pun in this review) a chaotic slew of beginning issues for Pantha‘s new ongoing series.  The story arc has had some ups and downs as it suffered from some overly corny elements that became essential to the explanations of its own world events.  Nonetheless the author and artist deliver a solid conclusion that is nothing short of fun and engaging.

Red Sonja #70

Who knew that the seemingly random encounter with a dragon and an even more off chance arrival in the country of Khitai would result in an epic journey full of blood and monsters?  I guess if you were astute, you could have guessed it.  But either way that doesn’t really matter because what we have here is an entertaining book from start to finish.

The Shadow #6

Whenever a creative team leaves a book, there’s always two points of view fluttering about.  No matter which way you lean you’ll either end this book feeling like they could have done more with their time, or you’ll close it and feel like they used their limited run wisely.  I’m going to tell you right off that bat that when I read this issue and reached the final page, I was satisfied but I still wanted to see what they would have done next.

Battle Beasts #4

Following from the last issue, things are definitely drawn to a conclusion. its not the most obvious of endings, but it might not be the most satisfying. There is no epic, drawn out battle; given the short run of the series, this might be for the best. The art itself does a great job, however, depicting the various beasts and the Dread Weapons themselves.

Cobra #18

Following up from the climatic ending to the previous issue, there is a big shake-up in G.I Joe: Cobra #18. With the powerful introduction of the Oktober Guard, a Russian Elite unit (the equivalent of America’s G.I Joe), things are certainly starting to look interesting. In short, this is a great issue of Cobra, and one that does very well to introduce a new contender. Its not made clear whether they are specifically villains or potential allies, but Cobra #18 definitely knows how to make an introduction.

Ghostbusters: 100-Page Spooktacular!

Are you ready for some random stories staring the world famous Ghostbusters?  If so then this is certainly a release for you.  From start to finish, this is one comic book that’s worth its pricetag only if you absolutely have not read these individual issues or if you’re a collector.

Star Trek The Next Generation Doctor Who Assimilation2 #6

With only two more issues of the sci-fi cross over left, Star Trek / Doctor Who Assimilation 2 #6 continues the trend of making the most of what each franchise has to offer, bringing both the similarities and differences to fruition. However, if one problem had to be identified, its that the title makes the rather strong statement that the Cybermen are more powerful than the Borg. Of course, this makes the plot much more interesting, leading to the Borg-Federation alliance, but it will undoubtedly have Star Trek fans arguing with Doctor Who fans over which side’s actually stronger.

Idolized #3

The story arc tightens as we head into the last legs of this competition.  Like an actual TV show recap we get a brief bit of history on what’s gone on this season on the American Idol equivalent for Superheroes.  The end result is a funny, disturbing but always engaging social commentary brought to you buy a talented creative team that delivers a really good third issue.

Grimm Fairy Tales #78

The weirdness at the Eschue Penitentiary continues in this latest entertaining and character rich issue.  Sela‘s psyche is center stage, as our heroine comes to term with some truths and begins to decide on a course of action while battling some nightmarish fantasies.  It’s a very fun read that will surely get fans excited for the series’ next outing.

It’s hard to bring any story arc to a finish, and as this latest one wraps-up fans should consider themselves lucky that they had a strong creative team to bring this one a to a rather successful conclusion.  Our protagonists in this arc are in a perilous situation and with their lives in the balance they need to gather their wits and figure out how to survive the day.

Irresistible #4

An absolutely riveting conclusion puts our protagonist in some very dire situations.  When faced with your life literally falling apart around you, how far are any of us really willing to go?  Can we let our better angels lead us to a brighter day or are we doomed to succumb to our inner demons?  These are the questions swirling around Allen‘s head as he lives every man’s dream.
