Voltron #12 Review

It’s a dire time for our heroes.  One of them has fallen, but where do the rest go from here?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Everything is changing for the Voltron Force. One of their number has perished, another casualty of the turmoil engulfing the galaxy. One of them is intending to leave the unit permanently for a much different life. One of them is receiving the opportunity of a lifetime, even though they might not be ready. One of them is committed to saving everything there is. And one, well one of them is carrying a secret that ensures they’ll never again be welcome amongst their ranks. One door closes and three more open in “31 Days,” as the Galaxy Alliance decides just how many more Voltrons are truly necessary to defend the universe…

Since the launch of this series the Voltron Force has been through the proverbial wringer.  And at this point it seems that all signs point to this creative team not stopping this beat down any time soon.

Brandon Thomas pens the script and the seasoned scribe wastes no time setting up some very emotional turns that are sure to have lasting repercussions.  One of the founding members is gone, another is thinking of leaving and their leader is up to something on his own.  In short the author is throwing everything out there, without forgetting the corner stones that have made this franchise such an enduring property over the last several decades.

The art by N. Steven Harris is a chaotic mess of visual splendor.  The pencil strokes executed do nothing more and nothing less than create a very distinctive version of this world while yielding only a few passing similarities to the source material.  I’m not complaining by any stretch of the imagination but when it comes to facial features aspects of each of these characters are exaggerated to the point that it may turn off some readers.

Voltron #12 is an absolutely engaging read that’s sure to please loyal fans as this saga marches toward its next step.  Highly recommended.
