Vampirella Strikes #1 Review

Does this latest mini-series featuring the scarlet clad heroine carry enough bite to make it worth your money or is it simply just a lifeless affair?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Fearful that her monstrous nature is taking control, Vampirella takes solace in some extreme violence, and conversation, all topped off with a nice glass of Merlot, in a Boston tavern overrun by the demonic in the first part of this six issue story. Living in a world of growing supernatural threats, Vampirella never knows what she will be facing from one moment to the next, but what she finds waiting for her in her Boston Brownstone when she returns from a night of hunting is the most unexpected of all. Angels of Heaven sent by God . . . and they want Vampirella to work for them.

Are you ready for a heart to heart with one of the good monsters?  If so then this intriguing rendition is certainly for you as our vengeful vampire takes the time to survey her actions and talk about her feelings with a person she just saved.  I realize that at face value that may seem rather odd but trust me the creative team makes it more than work in this first stellar issue.

Tom Sniegoski delivers an exceptional script as he cuts right to the heart of an honest conversation between a victim and their savior.  In between the waxing of intellectual stress we also discover some supernatural problems that are starting to bubble to the surface as the pace of the romp brilliantly realizes a compelling story.  Character development is front and center as this writer sees the inherent strength behind the heroine and he fully embraces it.

The art by Johnny Desjardins does exactly what it needs to do as it more than lives up to the strikingly strong narrative.  From the creatures to Vampirella, each moment and panel is rendered with precision while offering an immense amount of fine detail.  Simply put the level of professionalism on display here makes this effort a slice above the rest.

Vampirella Strikes #1 is an exceptional realization of this storied franchise and after the strength of this outing I’m excited to see where this goes.  Highly recommended.
