The official description from Dynamite:

Stranded in the Deep South and severely wounded from a mystical demon’s blade, Vampirella must continue her quest to save her former lover’s soul, protect an innocent child, and not die in the process. Can Vampirella battle a bloodthirsty horde of rabid demons as her body fails her?

Vampirella-Southern Gothic 3_CWhen I first began covering this specific title for UTF, I had absolutely zero expectations and no idea what to expect.  Thankfully after three issues I can honestly say that as far as this property is concerned this creative team has a winner here.  They’ve taken southern tropes and mixed them with the supernatural in a way that’s cosmetic in execution but also strangely inviting.  In short: this is a good concept that’s bound to find an audience.

Nate Cosby pens the script behind this tale of love lost, betrayal and missing parts.  Our heroine has come to help an old lover in need which leads to more monsters and confusion in this literary journey. The interesting dynamic at play, is how the author innately takes a powerful character, like Vampirella, and breaks her down just enough to see her core humanity.  It’s not unfamiliar but the way the scribe goes about executing it is interesting, as the motives of the players surrounding her are not pure to say the least.

The art by José Luís is just as strong as the narrative at play here.  The talent effortlessly builds a concrete visual language that expresses the obvious and subtle elements in the varied romp.  I specifically found the artist’s interpretation of the main character to be spot on as he used elegant line work to build a truly beautiful version of this tough as nails and most assuredly storied icon.  To sum up: I guarantee that these illustrations will lure you in from the first page to the final panel.

Vampirella: Southern Gothic #3 is without a doubt a really good addition that’s certainly worth both your money and time.  Recommended.
