The series has reached its eleventh hour and it has to be asked: is it still worth following?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Vampirella 37_CIt’s always been an easy mistake to dismiss this title as little more than eye candy with no real substance, but as this creative team continually proves there’s worth within this supernatural franchise. There are some off moments here and there, but for the most part what we get is an exemplary effort that brings family issues to the fore, along with a few final wrinkles that were carefully selected for these sordid festivities.  In short: it’s a bumpy but nonetheless thrilling ride.

Brandon Jerwa pens the script and the author has a fine grasp on what makes this mother and daughter relationship work.  They’re imperfect but in the end their connection stretches out beyond their moral differences.  But beneath that fact, especially since their unexpected reunion, there’s something more than meets the eye.  But its never been put to the test as much as it has now.  And in the final moments of this release we see how everything has been building toward this, as the penultimate outing highlights the inner strength of the property and potential downfall of our heroine’s struggles.

The art by Heubert Khan Michael is basic, but within its simplicity is an elegance that easily makes this entire comic book worthwhile.  His depictions of the characters fit what we know but there were some moments in between the covers that left me slightly underwhelmed.  To his credit this talent does enough right to let the minor inconsistencies go, as the series marches toward a cliffhanger that’s going to shake its devoted fanbase.

Vampirella #37 is a really good supernatural yarn where the work of those behind it bares interesting fruit.  Recommended.
