Vampirella #34 Review

We’ve reached a turning point in this franchise, but is the creative team barking up the wrong tree?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Having glimpsed a possible future, Vampirella makes a major choice for herself: she’s going to become the Patron Saint of Monsters, and start by constructing a place of refuge for the weird and fearful. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions…

It’s a noble sentiment to come to the conclusion that monsters, are not all evil, and after years of fighting our scarlet clad heroine sees an opportunity to unite them in a sort of haven.  Much like people however they are full of deception and it took only one day to see the flaws in this plan.

Brandon Jerwa is responsible for a lot of the problems in the life of everyone’s favorite vampire, and this arc in no different.  Taking on the unexpected role of a Charles Xavier archetype, Vampirella goes forth on a mission of peace and understanding.  What makes this different from X-Men recruitment however is that she’s willing to do all that’s necessary to get some of them to go along with it.  By the end of the issue I found myself grinning ear to ear as the scribe presses onward to new territory that should excite even the most critical fanboy or fangirl.

The talent Heubert Khan Michael handles the art but does so in a way that’s beyond impressive.  His illustrations lend so much credibility to the script because his skills have grown to the point that even the most complex vision gets that proper amount of attention.  When the sequences call for it he yields something that’s full of supernatural spunk as this yarn includes quite a few different types of creatures. With all that said there were a few instances where panels looked a tad bit rushed and some unnecessary deformities took place, but these were few and far between.

Vampirella #34 is interesting as the people behind it deliver another arc that feels organically constructed.  In short: it earns a recommendation.
