Vampirella #29 Review

With the considerable family issues that’re now facing our scarlet clad vampire, where does the story go?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun” (Part 1 of 3) – After being scattered around for a bit, Team Vampirella is reunited with new purpose. It’s a good thing, too, because the team will have their hands full fighting a coven of witches in the present, while Vampirella and Criswell are otherwise occupied. And by “occupied,” we mean their minds have been projected 100 years into the future!

The dynamic perspectives at play here yield a story that’s simply enthralling.  From the first page to the final panel, this creative team quite successfully struts their stuff as they flex their proverbial muscles to deliver something that’s not perfect but it’s entertaining nonetheless.

Brandon Jerwa pens the script and he effortlessly crafts a compelling piece of fiction.  What we have here is an issue that’s mostly a set-up jaunt, as the dialogue itself acts as a catalyst of sorts for the momentum of the narrative.  With that said there were some pitfalls as some of the dialogue just came off as far to corny or perhaps too wordy but for the most part the author handily crafts a believable set of conversations that will surely keep longtime fans enthralled all the way to the finish.

What can be said about the art by Patrick Berkenkotter?  Firstly, each panel and line therein is delivered in a way that ebbs and flows with a delicate yet sophisticated touch.  The end result is not a visual masterpiece but it’s fairly close as each character is sharply realized, backgrounds are lavishly detailed and this world gets a rendition that’s absolutely second to none.  In short: if the story is not enough, by this comic for these very pretty pictures.

Vampirella #29 is a stellar issue in a run that has been nothing short of engaging. Sure there have been pitfalls here and there, as the subject matter itself is inherently divisive but that doesn’t stop it from earning a recommendation.
