Vampirella #27 Review

Are the continuing adventures featuring this classic scarlet clad heroine still worth your hard earned money and time?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

The 2-part “Theories of Relativity” story begins here! Secrets – and maybe a little blood – are certain to be spilled when Vampirella finds herself in the midst of an unexpected family reunion. The revelations don’t stop there – we’re also pulling back the curtain to reveal the origin stories of Criswell and The Conjuress! How are they connected, and what does their bond have to do with Vampirella’s mother, Lilith?

The world has been through the proverbial wringer, but there are some lasting consequences that may be more than just mere surface damage.  The first signs of the potential fallout from Dracula‘s plan, consist of a mother and daughter reunion that may actually lead to a necessary fix in that relationship… or perhaps something worse.

The script by Brandon Jerwa explores just enough to warrant its hefty weight and the more than competent narrative it bares.  From start to finish the dialogue is certainly up to the task, as the natural interactions between Vampirella and her mother, Lillith, brings forth some truly human moments that highlight the strengths of our heroine.  Overall the story taking place here is a basic one, that seems to be heading down a compelling road that will surely have some lasting consequences beyond this current journey.

Heubert Kahn Michael handles the art, and the pencil work yields some expertly crafted designs that can only be described as rather befitting to the tale at hand.  His rendition of this world paired with a striking set of visualizations easily sets-up the overall look of this rendition.  There were quite a few moments where the lack of detail seemed to detract from the overall package but upon seeing these completed panels these moments didn’t amount to much.

Vampirella #27 is yet another capable entry in a stellar series that does a lot to continue the heritage of this beloved franchise.  From the quality writing to the exceptional art this comic comes recommended.
