Vampirella #19 Review

Vampirella collides with an old foe in this latest issue, should you care?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Old enemies resurface, Dracula is on the prowl, and Vampirella struggles with the machinations of both her foes and her supposed allies, Cestus Dei. And in the face of intrigue and violence, a terrifying scheme, hatched beneath the city of Seattle is on the verge of casting all that lives into a sea of blood.

In Vampirella #19 our series heroine may have bit off more than she can chew as she faces an old foe with some eager allies.  It’s never fun lurking around a dark, dirty, old crypt, but someone has to do it.  Thankfully for the readers out there Vampirella is on the scene, slowly peeling away the layers of this somewhat complex little story arc.

This latest outing has a fun and very entertaining script that allows quick and simple inner dialogue to frame the current situation.  Eric Trautmann does a very good job setting up the reveal of the true antagonist, while maintaining a decent enough grip on our heroine and the tertiary characters to make readers truly concerned about their well-being.  Though, there are times where the dialogue comes off a bit stiff and wholly unnecessary.

There’s no getting around it, the art in this issue is functional but a bit bland.  Jose Malaga deserves credit for delivering some rather expansive panels with an impressive amount of characters therein, but there are no dynamic shots to speak of.  The art is by no means bad, it is however average.

Vampirella #19 is an engaging read that will more than likely leave fans thirsty for more.  Despite some artistic and narrative drawbacks this issue does succeed in offering readers a fun ride.  It’s by no means great, but it’s good enough to get recommended.
