Transformers vs G.I Joe #2 Review

Transformers vs G.I Joe 2 AltThe title says it all really. Transformers vs G.I Joe #2 has a plot of sorts but, really, you know what you’re getting more or less when you see G.I Joe and Transformers on the same title. This issue is very good at doing what it says on the tin.

The official description from IDW:

BOOTS ON THE GROUND! The war has begun—and no bars will be held! SCARLETT’s forces go head-to-head with MEGATRON’s hordes—and the most off-beat adventure in comic book history hits a new level of dangerous alliances, deadly invasions, and devastating betrayals!

There isn’t any other way to refer to this title than a “fun romp”. It blends two franchises together, spreading popular characters from either franchise throughout. Yet, wacky plot aside, it tries to be a little fresh with it’s portrayal. Megatron, for instance, is seen as a religious leader, a stark difference compared to his current iteration. Similarly, G.I Joe feel very old school, with plenty of gadgets and toys.

In terms of writing then, it’s very hard to sum up. The title has always tried to capture a retro feel and John Barber and Tom Scioli certainly understand this. The plot is rather fast but it is never dull. I suspect many will find it captivating, although some people might find this older style of writing to fleeting and prone to jumping from subplot to subplot. However, in terms of its own goals, it’s hard to call it anything other than a success.

Similar to the writing, the art style is something that might split opinion. Tom Scioli’s visual treatment is very much designed to evoke an old-school approach – in fact, some people could be forgiven for thinking of this as a re-print of an older story. That said, there are a few little touch-ups that give the modern nature away: the lines are much tighter and some of the more detailed characters are well fleshed out.

All in all, this is a very successful issue, even if it is appealing to a niche audience. Still, there are people who want this and I think they will find this a very satisfying read.
