Transformers: Regeneration One #90 Review

Natural Selection concludes with this issue. Does it deliver a satisfying finisher? Yes and then some.

Here’s the official description from IDW:

TOO LITTLE-TOO LATE!

As Scorponok’s Dark Reign comes ever closer to spreading right across Cybertron, Grimlock launches a desperate counterstrike, in the face of almost innumerable odds. Does the Dinobot commander really have one last ace up his sleeve, or does his ‘plan’ amount to a glorious — but doomed — last stand?

Grimlock has been the star of this story, with the subplot of Galvatron taking over the Arc slowly becoming a huge priority. Here we finally see the Dinobot leader come to blows with Scorponok. In many ways it’s reminiscent of the Optimus Prime/Megatron battle some issues ago. The finishing to this battle however will have the reader anticipating the next issue really badly. Then we have Galvatron, Starscream, and Shockwave back on Earth which now brings another subplot. Transformers fans are going to have a blast with this one.

Andrew Wildman shows that he knows how to get fans anticipated with things to come. Despite Starscream tens of thousands of times in the past betraying Megatron with ulterior schemes, what happens here puts a cool spin on that considering the alliance which is forged  Besides being a conclusion to this arc, it also sets up some things for the next story, ‘Destiny,’ which claims to be ‘the end begins here.’ Grimlock is written once again extremely well, the dialogue with him and Scorponok can’t be beat.

Simon Furman’s art is at its finest here. It really compliments the dramtatic tension of whatever is currently happening. From the big battle to Optimus’s surprised look, it’s the best type of art for a Generation One throwback with a modern twist. The covers are excellent for the most part. The main one is a stunningly dynamic shot of Grimlock and Scorponok, one of my personal favorites. Cover B however is just as good, especially for fans of the classic days. What beats a retro rendition of the big fight? The RI is alright…but doesn’t capture the level of epicness like the other two do.

Overall, another great installment in the Regeneration One saga. The battle between Grimlock and Scorponok is amazingly done with a very unforeseen ending. Galvatron and Starsctream are back in the game and when you think about it, the plots that’s going to be connected will be insane since it’s almost like a domino effect. With that, I eagerly look forward to Destiny.
