Transformers: Regeneration One #100 Review

Transformers_regeneration_100_variantWell, here it is, the final chapter. After so long, does Transformers: Regeneration One #100 give the series the farewell it needs?

The official description from IDW:

THE GREATEST ENEMY… the greatest challenge… shall come from within. And there will be an ending. This is it, the battle the TRANSFORMERS must win, and yet dare not. The original and founding TRANSFORMERS comic comes to an epic and giant-sized conclusion, with all-out battle on CYBERTRON. Or should that be “Cybertrons”? Shocks, surprises, guest stars and more. It may be a cliché, but this one really does have it all!

Of course, this entirely depends on how long you’ve read the series and how familiar you are with it. For the long time fans, this is a job well done. The ending feels climatic and, more importantly, finale. It wraps everything up in a satisfying, emotional close and throws in a cathartic epilogue just to seal the deal. That said, it does refer to a few things in the past, so it definitely pays to know your stuff.

As his last chance to put his mark on the title, Simon Furman makes sure to go full force here. While he could bring in every character left, right and center, the focus is very much still on Rodimus. Furman really understands the character and easily flexes his writing muscles with an effortless, smooth exploration of what makes him the guy/robot/robot-guy he is. Likewise, plenty of other characters get enough screen time throughout, adding to the strong sense of satisfaction that leaks out of Regeneration One #100.

Visually, there almost feels like a little extra pop here. With Andrew Wildman, Geoff Senior and Guido Guidi on pencils and Stephen Baskerville and Geoff Senior on colors, there’s enough creative talent here. Although art duties are separated into three sections, the transitions are smooth and the styles aren’t too different to cause alarm. I personally prefer the opening style, which has plenty of detail and really pays attention to detail, but the whole issue is pleasant to look at. What more can you want?

All in all, Transformers: Regeneration One #100 is the send-off the series deserves. The team behind the title but a massive amount of work into ensuring this, and all their efforts are clear to see. Long-time readers will not be dissapointed.
