Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #14

One of the more unusual issues, Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #14 has a more abstract narrative. Most of the issue takes place in memories or between brains, so it certainly provides a change of pace from the normal format and setting.

First, the official description from IDW:

“THE RETURN OF OVERLORD! Locked in a secret cell underneath the Lost Light, hidden from the crew, a DECEPTICON psychopath is talking without opening his mouth… and an AUTOBOT with needles for fingers is about to make the biggest mistake of his life.”

This issue is mainly an exchange between Chrome-dome and Overlord. The latter is a prisoner, whilst the former is trying to access memories. This set-up allows for a more unusual situation. The two exchange plenty of dialogue whilst bouncing from various scenes in Overlord’s history. It gives a greater insight into the Transformers universe, whilst offering a unique exchange between the two characters that would seldom interact otherwise. Its not often that the little guy gets the upper-hand over the big, tough baddie, so the writing makes sure to demonstrate this unusual set-up.

Furthermore, because there’s really only two characters involved, the issue isn’t afraid to go a little more in-depth on backgrounds and personalities. The two become well defined over the issue, giving them greater context and an understanding to the reader.

More surprisingly, this issue isn’t without its share of humor. Transformers has always had its lighter moments, but there are a few sections in here that show some humorous talent. There’s subtle wordplay and even a mock-birth scene. It sounds stupid, but it makes sense when read in context; plus, its a decent enough laugh without going out of the way to do it.

Of course, nothing ever goes right for long. More Than Meets The Eye #14 is not without its share or twists, turns and revelations. At the very least, the conclusion leaves on a worthwhile cliffhanger. The ending is full of tension, surprise and turmoil. Its very fluid, and knows when to make an impact, rather than simply feel forced in. In short, the next issue should definitely be interesting.
