“OUTBREAK,” Conclusion

What will war take from Dr. David Loren?

Think Tank 12_CIt’s hard not to close this first volume and grin, because at the end of the day the creative team has succeeded in crafting something wholly unique. A slacker romp that dances the line between the educational and the satirical while using political maneuverings as its primary engine of choice. Did I mention that as all of these various components come into play we still somehow get a comic book that’s massively entertaining?

The script by Matt Hawkins is top notch. The co-creator knows the characters and the world they inhabit so well that he endeavors to yield a heavy handed plot while still managing to deliver some well-placed quips along the way. Not only does this script engage, it also instructs, and depending on your own personal political idealism you may find some of the conclusions and even intersections to be a tad bit disconcerting. Even still the author deserves a lot of credit, as he charts a finale that wraps up this inaugural volume without robing it of the potentially earned emotional response.

Can I please have Rahsan Ekedal draw some more comics! There’s a specific two-page spread that caught my attention, as a skirmish full of kinetic motion and an ever present amount of machinery proves the salt of this talent during some dire times. In short: if you’re going to pick up this comic be warned you eat your green vegetables (learn) but you also get to enjoy an exquisite slice of butter pecan pie (the illustrations)! To sum up: he has an ability to craft dazzling displays that are full of complex details.

Think Tank #12 is outstanding! It has all the ingredients that a proper climax deserves while still clearing the stage for its second volume. Thanks to the architects and their bold vision the latest adventure of Dr. David Loren is without a doubt a must own.
