Thief of Thieves #20 Review

Thief of thieves 20_preview pageThief of Thieves is back! It’s the start of a new arc and, after a long but shaky run so far, Thief of Thieves #20 needs to hit the ground running.

The official description from Image:

“THE HIT LIST” starts here! Conrad may have pulled off his last heist, but not without making some new enemies. Is anyone in his life safe?

Let me get straight to the point – this isn’t so much the start of a new arc, but more the slow epilogue to close off the last one. This issue does set-up the premise, in a manner of speaking, but the vast majority of it wraps up the issues from the last arc. Mainly, what happened to Redmond and how he got out of Italy.

That said, it’s not a boring ride. Andy Diggle writes in enough action and excitement, while the opening dialogue is tense yet witty. It suits Redmonds character, as well as the cat and mouse nature of the title. My only other gripe is that he’s cut the cast down to Celia and Redmond. Thief of Thieves has a bigger cast with plenty of potential, but the focus on these two, including the uninteresting one-way love aspect, doesn’t excite me.

Visually, Thief of Thieves #20 has looked as good as it ever has. Shawn Martinbrough offers some great pencils and some fluid action sequences, but its nothing unexpected. Likewise, Adriano Lucas offers some decent colors, but the over-excessive use of orange and blues is getting tired and boring. There are so many areas a title like this could go – heck, the fact it even made Italy nothing more than orange and blues says enough about the creativity on offer here.

All in all, it’s not a bad issue but it sure isn’t grabbing my attention for the next issue. In fact, by the end of it, I’m not even sure what direction its going in. This really is not the best way to start a new arc, but its not a bad way to end off the last one for anyone who still remembers it.
