The Walking Dead #97 Review

If Invincible’s the mascot of Image, The Walking Dead is the team. By 97 issues, you are either reading the series or not. Thanks to the show, this comic has been enjoying its popularity among the big boys. This is my first ever issue, I’m here to tell you if this Part One of ‘Something to Fear‘ is new reader accessible. This series is built around zombies (obviously) so it appeals to a wide audience. 97 issues in, how can a new reader jump in? The Walking Dead is famous for its diverse character dynamics, yet Issue 97 you can jump in without feeling the need to read the previous 96. Unlike Prophet, you can jump in for one of the most engaging comics this week.

The official description from Image:

TWO ISSUES IN ONE MONTH!
The start of a new storyline, leading up to our monumental issue 100! After nearly 100 issues, Rick and the other survivors finally have “SOMETHING TO FEAR.”

The Walking Dead is a famous name and the leader in the zombie genre. Last year I was watching the TNT show Falling Skies, (which people say is basically The Walking Dead with aliens) and the characters, scenery, and overall tone remind me of it. (That’s a good thing by the way.) The issue is very dialogue-centric. With generic writing, this issue could have been a really big miss. But Robert Kirkman nails the dialogue and makes these characters engaging to read. You care what happens to these people, and how can one not enjoy seeing zombies on the pages?

I had forgotten that this series was in black-and-white. At first, I thought it wouldn’t look that great, since I think black-and-white is more suited for manga. But after a few pages, I realized color would have ruined the mood. The detail to the characters gives the book an appropriate gritty look. The story feels at ‘ease,’ yet at the same time the whole backdrop has a dangerous atmosphere. While the zombies briefly appear, when they do make their presence known, it’s brutal. Now I know what this series is really known for: zombies with the perfect portrayal.

Overall, if you haven’t been reading this series, pick up this issue. It’s the perfect jumping on point. The writing is strong, and the story/characters are just too engaging to miss. I’m a reader for life now, go get The Walking Dead #97. you will not be disappointed.
