The Spider #6 Review

After last month’s conclusion is the world really in need of another tale starring The Spider?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

A ruthless crime lord is on the rise. The clock is ticking on a politician’s life. Only The Spider stands a chance of stopping the Wingman before he strikes and sends the city spiraling into chaos, but can he do it alone? It’s the return of Ronald Jackson, one of the pulp-era Spider’s most trusted associates!

Our hero went through the ringer dealing with Anput and her zombie horde over the last slew of issues, but now our protagonist is attempting to cope with a slightly more personal tale.  An old squad mate from Iraq has resurfaced and in his wake a new villain rears the feathered heads of his winged minions.  Prepare for action and political intrigue as this creative team brings you a pulp romp with all the classic trimmings.

David Liss once again steps into the lead as he pens a thorough script that ebbs and flows with the history of this genre.  His modern day vigilante is equal parts Punisher and Batman as he uses both his connections and intelligence to protect the innocent at any violent cost.  The dialogue in this issue is a very solid improvement over previous releases as it easily offers some expansion to established characterizations.  But the book itself still revisits some unnecessary plot points which ultimately prevents this tale from truly soaring.

Colton Worley continues to impress as the series artist.  His unique visual sense and photo realistic panels make this title standout from the usual comic book crowd.  He offers visualizations via some truly dynamic splash-pages that keep the action in this kinetic tale thoroughly engaging even during the slower and more methodical moments.
