The future of SPIDER-MAN is MARVEL NOW!

Okay, let’s admit right off the bat that as soon as Amazing Spider-Man was announced to be canceled following the upcoming #700 we all knew that there would inevitably be a new series to follow the adventures of old webhead, because there’s just no way the House of Ideas would lose one of their top-sellers.  So fanboys and fangirls I present to you, the Superior Spider-Man.

The official press release from Marvel:

This January, the Web-Head embraces a new chapter in his life in Superior Spider-Man #1, kicking off the all-new ongoing series from the amazing creative team of writer Dan Slott and artist Ryan Stegman! As part of Marvel NOW!Superior Spider-Man  joins a number of titles that will take the Marvel Universe in an exciting all-new direction, as the industry’s top creators join the top Super Heroes to deliver all-new ongoing series, great for new and lapsed readers alike!

Peter Parker has spent a lifetime living up to the responsibilities his powers foisted upon him but his Amazing story finally ends dramatically in the historic Spider-Man #700. NOW! the new Spider-Man has arrived and he is better in every single way. Smarter, stronger…Superior.

Continuing Spider-scribe, Dan Slott, had this to say:

This is still very much the world of Spider-Man. There may be a new Spider-Man here, doing things in a new and different way, but you’re going to see the Spider-cast reacting to this. You’re going to see how this Spider-Man will deal with our Spider-Man’s villains. How will he react to this Spider-Man’s supporting cast? That is clearly the world of this book. The world hasn’t changed, just the hero.

Marvel Editor In Chief Axel Alonso, added this about the new title and the creative team behind it:

Spider-Man has learned a lot during his time as a super hero, making him not just amazing anymore, he’s more than that,” said Axel Alonso, Editor In Chief, Marvel Entertainment. “Dan and Ryan have Spider-Man on a path that will challenge him in every way. Just because Spider-Man is Superior, it doesn’t mean things are even close to getting easier!

So there you have it, but does this new title really sound all that superior?  Do you want a more edgy Spider-Man book?  Will this be a complete waste of your time and money?  Sound off with your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Marvel seems to be full of chutiyas….they all have ruined the character from top to bottom and from left to right..i hate them all..

The best thing about ASM lately has been the artwork by Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Caselli, and Ryan Stegman. The horrible out of perspective anatomy scribbles by Humberto Ramos are totally cringeworthy.

I don’t know why Marvel keep giving him work. I’m all for artistic style but messy pseudo manga style for Spiderman just doesn’t look right.

“Superior Spiderman” is also such a dumb sounding title. Marvel are going all out to lose even more long time readers and Dan Slott isn’t that great a writer anymore. His writing has become hyped up showmanship with no substance.

Good story telling begins with individual characterization, not by changing costumes, the title of the book, and making it more brutal, dark or whatever. It’s pure and simple laziness and total disrespect for the character. What are they trying to prove? You cannot better what Stan Lee & Steve Ditko perfected.

You can’t engage readers with substantial mature storytelling. Your creativity has stagnated and rather than pass the mantle on to somene who can, you’re succumbing to the incontinent urge to mess everything up for the sake of what – a short term increase in sales? Wow! that’s Marvel NOW the house of NO IDEA.

My ASM collection stops at #700.
