Ten Grand #6 Review

Ten Grand Banner

As we enter the sixth outing, is there a spark left within this series?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

Why has a wounded angel been chained and imprisoned on the outskirts of hell for a hundred thousand years? And why should Joe Fitzgerald care enough to help her, since it’ll just slow him down in his search for Laura? Knowing that his actions could result in his permanent death, and with a civil war breaking out in heaven, Joe must make a fateful decision that will endanger not only his soul, but the soul of the woman he loves more than life itself.

Ten Grand 6_CWhat we get out of this comic is a monthly reminder that simple sagas, when handled by the right people, can be interesting.  There’s a lot of corny elements on the surface but its the juice underneath that makes the whole romp worthwhile.

J. Michael Straczynski pens the script and the scribe does an outstanding job taking our primary through a portion of Hell.  It won’t be what you think it is, because truth be told, the guilty make their own areas of suffering and that’s very true for our former mob enforcer.  What struck me the most is how well the dialogue flowed, because from beginning to end I was never taken out of the conversation even in moments that would normally inspire some groans of disbelief.  For some reason at the end of the day it all worked out splendidly.

The art by C.P. Smith is unique to say the least, as his interpretation of the cast is quirky but always functional.  There were some panels where the oddly shaped portions just took em out of the experience but for the most part these negative instances were few and far between.  By the end of the book I found myself easily grinning as I enjoyed one very potent epic battle and a proper send off to this particular release.

Ten Grand #6 is not perfect, nor is it trying to be, but it’s entertaining when the situation calls for it.  Recommended.
