Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classics Micro-Series: Michelangelo #1 Review

Behold a retro heartwarming holiday adventure, but is this re-release really worth your money and time?  Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

The original Micro-Series is BACK, this time with all-new colors! Michelangelo’s trademark playfulness, empathy, and easygoing nature are displayed in full four-color glory in this classic one-shot story. Mikey experiences a very merry (and very harrowing!) Christmas, adopting a stray cat while stopping thieves from stealing toys meant for orphaned children. Santa’s got nothing on this green ninja with a big heart!

It’s that time of year again when comic books, TV shows and pretty much any ongoing media outlets attempt to deliver some seasonal magic by forcing a random narrative upon its dedicated audience.  A lot of these tales can be shameless cash-ins but it’s possible for them to be endlessly enjoyable when they’re done right, and TMNT fans can rest easy because this is one of the good ones.

Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird do an outstanding job on the script delivering competent dialogue that for the most part exists to service this basic but solid plot.  It’s hard not to be somewhat critical with the words on display here because there were some specific scenes that lasted a bit too long, as an overabundance of explanation bogged down the pace.  But overall what we get is a rather nifty tale staring a cherished character which features some compelling but random holiday adventures.

The art by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird carries its unique visual style that easily set this book apart from the pack when it originally hit comic stands some years ago.  Each line and curve succeeds in establishing the core strength of our main characters while simultaneously implementing enough quirky elements to nail the holiday cheer.  In short if you’re a fan this is certainly a release packaged just for you.

I may be a somewhat sentimental sap but Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classics Micro-Series: Michelangelo #1 hit all the right cords with me, enough so that I recommend a purchase.
