Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classics #6 Review

Are you ready for another trip down memory lane?  Should you even bother with it?  Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

What do you get when you cross four ninja turtles with a mysterious robot from outer space called the Fugitoid, and walking, talking gladiator dinosaurs? You get classic comic book action and sci-fi mayhem at its very best, all here in this newly colored tale of the original TMNT!

I’ll be honest, when the Ninja Turtles went interstellar with their adventures I was instantly hooked to their ongoing narrative.  Whether it was because I had an established affinity for the science fiction genre or not, the younger version of myself bought into this craziness completely.

Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird continue their work as series scribes.  And back in the day when they did what they did here it was new and exciting, but I’ll admit looking at it now with the sober vision of an adult version of myself I recognize how corny it is.  The dialogue is hefty and bloated as it over explains things and the story itself has its own share of missteps.  But at the end of the day, this jaunt will appeal to fanboys around my age who yearn for this type of thing and will make people who are new to comics groan in disbelief.

The space opera was uplifted by brilliant pencil strokes that kept the narrative flowing smoothly.  Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird at this point in their comic book run had more than matured their artistic sensibilities.  Their panel work was top-notch as the turtles engaged in espionage and action on an alien planet complete with some diverse locals and interesting characters.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classics #6 is a successful trip down memory lane.  It may not be for all fans but I had a lot of fun with it and I’m sure many old school enthusiasts will too.  Recommended.
