Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #23 Review

New York is in for a world of hurt as our heroes lay divided and wounded while their enemies rally.  But should you care?  Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

“CITY FALL” part 2: Desperate times call for desperate measures as unexpected alliances take shape. Will the Turtles be able to find the Foot Clan’s HQ in time to stop the next phase of Shredder’s heinous plan? Plus, the return of the witch Kitsune! What ancient evil will she unleash? One Turtle is about to find out!

The adventures of everyone’s favorite heroes in a half-shell continue here, but trust me when I say what happens within this issue will have fanboys and fangirls salivating about where the latest iteration of this franchise goes from here.  We have so much being thrown at the audience that I was honestly in awe at how well the team brought the varying plot lines together to create a brilliant crescendo.

The script by Tom Waltz is a gripping jaunt that from the first page to the final panel will hold your attention.  From the dire situations we find our characters in, to the risky alliances that are forming in the wake of apparent tragedy and moments of desperation there’s just so much to sink your teeth into.  If I was to levy a complaint it would be that some of the dialogue came off a bit heavy handed but trust me when I say that did little to sully an otherwise exceptional tale.

Mateus Santolouco handles the bulk of the art with some complimentary assistance to fill in the hyper-realistic elements found within this narrative.  The talent, for his part, does an exceptional job bringing a realistic interpretation of the world to light.  His pencil strokes create not just passable renditions but believable interpretations that will surely have fans counting the days until the next issue arrives at their local comic shop.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #23 is an excellent book that stumbles rarely as it struts its stuff all the way to some potent praise from this reviewer.  Highly recommended.
